2. Layered Timeline

Below is the information you need to add: 

  • 776 BC - The first Olympic Games takes place. The games would take place every 4 years in honor of the Greek god Zeus.
  • 600 BC - The first Greek coins are introduced.
  • 570 BC - Pythagoras is born. 
  • 508 BC - Democracy is introduced in Athens.
  • 490 BC -  Battle of Marathon
  • 432 BC - The temple to Athena, the Parthenon, is completed in Athens on the Acropolis.
  • 431 BC - The wars between Sparta and Athens begin. They are called the Peloponnesian Wars. The wars will last 27 years with Sparta eventually conquering Athens in 404 BC.
  • 336 BC - Alexander the Great becomes king and begins conquering.
  • 323 BC - Alexander the Great dies. 
  • 146 BC - Rome defeats the Greeks
  • 31 BC - Rome defeats Egypt and all of the Greek Empire becomes part of the Roman Empire
  • 393 - The Olympic games are ended by Roman emperor Theodosius.
  • 1453 -Greece becomes part of the Ottoman Empire.
  • 1822 - Greece declares its independence from the Ottoman Empire.
  • 1832 - King Otto becomes the first modern King of Greece. 
  • 1917 - Greece joins the Allies in WWI
  • 1924 - The Greek monarchy is abolished
  • 1936 - John Metaxas becomes dictator of Greece.
  • 1941 - Germany invades Greece.
  • 1944- Greece is liberated from German control.
  • 1946-1949 - The Greek Civil War
  • 1952 - Greece forms a new democratic government.
  • 2002 - The Euro becomes the official currency replacing the drachma.
